What we publish:
We primarily publish literary fiction, and occasionally non-fiction. What we are looking for is something artfully written: the way the story is told is as important - if not more so - than the plot itself. We rarely do short stories unless they are from an author whose full-length work we've published before. We are generally disinterested in science, romance, futuristic, horror, fantasy, or children's fiction; nor do we publish poetry (though we have done two novels-in-verse).
Important guidelines:
All submissions must be accompanied by an SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) if you want the material back and/or a response. No electronic submissions are accepted. It's best if you send the first 25 pages or so, and if we are interested we will ask to see the rest.
Where to send your submissions:
Attn: Judith Shepard
The Permanent Press

Sag Harbor, NY 11963
What happens next:
We read submissions in the order they are received, but since we get about 6,000 submissions per year and only publish 12 books a year, please be patient in waiting for a response. It can take up to several months . We do not log submissions or keep track of them, so don't ask for any "status" information: just trust that the post office has done its job and that your work has arrived successfully.
